Is Patchstream multi threaded?

Patchstream uses a multi threaded engine when scanning computers for software that may require patching. Patch deployment is single threaded; this is by design as patchstream considers that this reduces network load while not substantially affecting total patch deployment time.

Can Patchstream disable the automatic updaters for software that it can patch so they are no longer wasting resources?

Yes, however this is dependent on disabling updates being permitted by the software manufacturer. If they have hard coded an automatic update check every time the program is run, we cannot disable this.

I already use WSUS to manage my patches, why do I need Patchstream?

WSUS is an excellent tool, but it is only capable of updating Microsoft applications.

Does Patchstream require agents to be installed on all the computers to be patched?

No. Patchstream is completely agentless. It merely requires access to an account with privileges to install patches and access to the target computers WMI service. This is a one time operation and Patchstream is able to assist you configuring these.

Why does Patchstream require Administrator privileges?

Patchstream requires administrator privileges in order to be able to patch the computer it is running on. Microsoft do not allow the use of alternative credentials for WMI connections to the local computer.

How does Patchstream detect the version of an application installed on a computer?

Patchstream uses several different methods to determine the version of software that is installed on a computer being scanned. These are used in the following order:

  1. For applications that display a version number in the Add/Remove Programs list in control panel, Patchstream uses this version number.
  2. For applications that have a version number for a specific file in the application (e.g. application.exe) Patchstream uses this version number.
  3. For applications that have neither of the above, Patchstream will calculate a SHA-1 checksum for a specific file in the application (e.g. application.exe) and Patchstream will use this checksum to test if this file is the latest version known to Patchstream.

How does Patchstream protect saved credentials?

Patchstream uses the Windows Data Protection API to protect saved usernames and passwords used for patching computers.
